Project of Quality Improvement (2006 - 2010)
Challenges in treatment of congenital heart disease
In Egypt, the surgical treatment for congenital heart disease in infancy was listed as one of the Family Planning Technology specific projects among the key Tasks in the Tenth–Five year plan. However, due to economic and social conditions in Egypt 1ry &2ry prevention and treatment of CHD are still in the early phase of development. National conditions have also hindered a large portion of infant patients from receiving timely treatment because of economic causes. Finally, development imbalance exists among different regions in Egypt, so patients who may be candidates for neonatal or infantile surgeries have crowded only into a handful of hospitals. Therefore, tertiary prevention and surgical treatment is still of crucial importance.
Pediatric PO. Cardiac ICU, Abo El Reesh Hospital
In 2006 though there was a great progress in cardiac surgery and PO care in our center, still there was a significant gap between our outcome when compared to international benchmarks. So, it was vital to initiate a project for quality improvement in order to start and sustain excellence.
To achieve excellence in such a program, we followed all guidelines of American Academy of Pediatrics AAP for creating CV centers as well as JCI standards, which is an international organization designed mainly to create culture of safety and quality within health medical centers.
Here we review the current status of PPO.CICU in Abu El Reesh Hospital and highlight the latest advances in this exciting field, meanwhile state our mission and future perspectives for achieving further improvement in the new century.
